Wearable Allergy Monitor Tracks Real-Time Immune Responses

by Ella

A new wearable device, similar to a glucose monitor, is being tested for its ability to detect allergic reactions in real time. Developed by a team at MIT, this experimental patch continuously analyzes sweat for histamine and other immune markers, alerting users via smartphone when an allergic reaction begins. Early trials in asthma and food allergy patients showed promising results, with the device detecting reactions up to 10 minutes before noticeable symptoms appeared.

The technology relies on microneedles that painlessly penetrate the skin’s surface to measure biomarker fluctuations. In a pilot study with 50 participants exposed to controlled allergens, the wearable achieved 92% accuracy in predicting mild to moderate reactions. Researchers believe this could be revolutionary for high-risk individuals, such as those with a history of anaphylaxis, providing critical extra minutes to administer antihistamines or epinephrine.

Despite its potential, challenges remain, including calibration for different skin types and ensuring affordability. The developers aim to secure FDA clearance within two years, with an estimated price of $200 per device. Allergy advocates highlight that such innovations could save lives, particularly in children who may not recognize early reaction signs. However, some clinicians warn that over-reliance on wearables could lead to complacency in allergen avoidance strategies.
