Research Reveals Mental Health Impact on Those Strictest in Adhering to UK Covid Rules

by Ella

A recent study from Bangor University suggests that individuals who rigorously followed Covid lockdown rules are now experiencing the worst mental health outcomes. Researchers found that those who adhered most closely to pandemic restrictions are more likely to suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression. The study, led by Dr. Marley Willegers and colleagues, identified that individuals with “communal” personalities, characterized by empathy and sensitivity to others, were more likely to strictly adhere to the recommended lockdown protocols.

Conversely, individuals with “agentic” personalities, characterized by independence and a desire for control, were less likely to exhibit such behaviors. The study spanned the period of the first UK-wide lockdown from March to September 2020 and measured the mental well-being of 1,729 participants in Wales from February to May 2021.

The fear of contracting Covid played a dual role, acting as both a motivator for compliance and a contributor to negative mental health outcomes. The study suggests that while increasing individuals’ fear of infection may drive compliance, it also has detrimental consequences on well-being and recovery.

Dr. Willegers noted that some individuals struggled to transition from a period of consistent public health advice during the pandemic to a lack of guidance post-lockdown. He highlighted the absence of messaging campaigns to help individuals safely transition back to normality, particularly impacting those who maintained infection prevention behaviors and anxiety.

The Centre for Mental Health expressed deep concern over the lasting impact on mental health for those who followed pandemic restrictions. Andy Bell, the Chief Executive, highlighted the fear, loss, and trauma caused by the pandemic as factors contributing to lasting mental health effects. The study aligns with the broader trend of increased demand for NHS psychological and psychiatric services due to the widespread mental health damage caused by Covid.

Mark Winstanley, Chief Executive of the charity Rethink Mental Illness, emphasized the enduring impact on mental health for those who took significant steps to protect themselves and others. He acknowledged the persistent worries and concerns about health risks and loved ones, indicating that the legacy of the pandemic continues to affect many individuals.

As the UK navigates post-pandemic life, the study suggests that future government health advertising campaigns should consider the diverse personality types in the population. Dr. Willegers emphasized the need for campaigns to address both the personal costs and benefits involved, moving beyond a focus solely on individuals’ responsibility to others.
