With the arrival of spring, allergy symptoms are becoming increasingly common across Türkiye, prompting experts to highlight the growing concern over allergic diseases. According to Dr. Osman Şener, a specialist in internal medicine, allergies, and immunology at the University of Health Sciences (SBÜ) Gülhane Training and Research Hospital, nearly 20% of the Turkish population experiences allergy symptoms, signaling a widespread and escalating issue.
Rising Allergy Cases Across Türkiye
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Dr. Şener explained that as the allergy season begins, outpatient clinics are witnessing a significant increase in patient visits. This trend is reflective of the growing impact of respiratory allergies, particularly allergic rhinitis and asthma, which are frequently triggered by airborne pollen in the spring months.
“Pollen is one of the main factors behind respiratory allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma,” Dr. Şener noted. “During spring, pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers is released into the air, becoming a major issue for those susceptible to allergies in Türkiye.”
He particularly highlighted the central Anatolia region, where grain farming is prevalent, as a key area for increased allergy cases. The region’s abundance of grass and cereal pollen contributes significantly to the rise in allergic rhinitis and asthma cases during this season.
Understanding Respiratory Allergies
Respiratory allergies are generally classified into two categories: allergic rhinitis and asthma. Dr. Şener elaborated on the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, which include a runny nose with watery discharge, repeated sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching in the nose.
“Sometimes, these nasal symptoms can be accompanied by eye issues, such as redness, stinging, itching, and watering, known as allergic conjunctivitis,” he explained.
For those experiencing asthma, symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing. “Some individuals may show all of these symptoms, while others may experience only rhinitis or asthma more intensely,” Şener added.
Allergies vs. Flu: Recognizing the Differences
Dr. Şener also pointed out that allergic symptoms are often confused with those of the flu. However, the flu typically presents with higher fever, muscle and joint pain, and general fatigue—symptoms that are not commonly associated with allergies.
“In viral infections, symptoms like weakness, tiredness, and mild fever may appear. The nature of nasal discharge also differs. In bacterial infections, the discharge tends to be thick and yellow, unlike the watery discharge in allergies,” Şener explained.
In recent clinic visits, most patients were diagnosed with either allergic rhinitis or asthma, with symptoms closely resembling those of seasonal allergies.
The Prevalence of Allergies in Türkiye
Dr. Şener emphasized that allergic diseases are not rare in Türkiye, with approximately 20% of the population affected. He explained that allergies can be triggered by various substances in the air, food, or medications. While most people do not react to these substances, those with allergic tendencies have immune systems that perceive them as foreign, causing a response that leads to symptoms.
“These allergic reactions can even be harmful to a patient’s health,” he said, underscoring the need for public awareness and proper management of allergic conditions.
Managing Allergy Symptoms During Spring
Pollen allergies are especially prevalent in the spring as airborne pollen levels rise. Dr. Şener advised that during this time, it is best to minimize outdoor activities or move them indoors whenever possible.
“Outdoor activities should be limited, particularly during peak pollen hours,” he said. “Pollen levels are highest in the early morning, so delaying outdoor activities to the afternoon can help alleviate symptoms.”
Although it is nearly impossible to completely avoid pollen—since it can travel for kilometers through the wind—Dr. Şener suggested that reducing exposure can lessen the severity of symptoms. “When you open a window or breathe in outdoor air while going to work or school, you’re exposed to pollen,” he added.
While it’s easier to avoid allergens like pet dander or house dust, managing pollen allergies proves more difficult. Dr. Şener noted that for those whose symptoms cannot be controlled by natural methods alone, medical treatment may be necessary.
Conclusion
As allergy season takes hold across Türkiye, it is clear that a growing portion of the population is affected by the seasonal rise in symptoms. With an estimated 20% of the population experiencing allergic reactions, especially during the spring, it is crucial to raise awareness about allergies and their management. Individuals suffering from allergic rhinitis or asthma should take precautions during peak pollen seasons, and seek medical advice when symptoms become difficult to manage. With proper attention, it’s possible to reduce the impact of allergies on health and quality of life.
