The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report warning about the growing prevalence of drug allergies, particularly to antibiotics and NSAIDs. According to the report, adverse drug reactions account for nearly 5% of all hospital admissions worldwide, with allergic responses being a major contributor. Penicillin and sulfa drugs were identified as the most common triggers, but newer biologics and chemotherapy agents are also causing hypersensitivity reactions.
The WHO emphasizes the need for better diagnostic tools, as many cases are mislabeled as allergies without proper testing. They also urge healthcare providers to adopt stricter antibiotic stewardship programs to reduce unnecessary prescriptions, which contribute to the rise in drug allergies.
